Saratoga Springs, NY – The Soaring Eagles Men's Hockey team played the Huskies of Southern Maine to a 3-3 overtime tie in the opening round of the Skidmore Invitational. Elmira out-shot the Huskies 47-31 in the contest but failed to claim a victory.
EC trailed early as the Huskies scored two first period goals. The Soaring Eagles would enter the second period with a 2-0 deficit. The second period would belong to Elmira as they would notch two power-play goals. Darcy Vaillancourt '12 (Bonfield, ONT -- Innisfil Lakers, GMJHL) would score Elmira's first goal just fifty-eight seconds into the second period. Karl Linden '11 (Stockholm, Sweden -- Bradford Rattlers, GMJHL) and Kevin Willer '12 (Toronto, ONT -- North York Rangers, OPJHL) would tally assists on the goal. A little over four minutes later Brendan Sanders '12 (Mississauga, ONT -- Vaughan Vipers, OPJHL) would score his first goal of the season on a power-play chance. Linden and Willer would again be credited with assists. EC would enter the third period tied at two a piece.
In the third, Willer would score 1:18 into the period to give Elmira their first lead of the game. Sanders and Vaillancourt earned assists on the go-ahead goal. Elmira would look to hold on to the 3-2 lead but Southern Maine would notch a goal at the 13:42 mark to tie the game at three.
An overtime period would be needed but neither team would produce a score. In order to decide who would advance to the championship game, a shootout would be needed. Southern Maine would come out victorious in the shoot-out as they would score twice in four rounds, Elmira would score none. Elmira will be back in action tomorrow, November 28th at 1:00 p.m. to take on host Skidmore College in the consolation game.
