Elmira, NY – EC Women's Basketball dropped their first Empire 8 contest to visiting Ithaca College 64-49. The Soaring Eagles fall to 2-6 on the season while the Bombers of Ithaca improve to 4-3.
In the first half Elmira would own a 4 point lead with just under 14 minutes to play before Ithaca would make a strong run. The lead would go back and forth for the next 6 minutes until a stifling Ithaca defense held the Elmira offense to just 4 points in the final 9:08 of the half. EC would trail going into halftime 35-22.
Elmira would open the second half with a 9-2 run, bringing them to within 6 points of the Bombers. Ithaca would stay strong to build up a healthy lead and maintain it until the end of the game, taking the contest by 15 points. Elmira's three point shooting was detrimental in the second half as they went 0-11 from distance.
Elmira was led by rookie guard Maria Thannhauser '14 (Newfield, NY -- Newfield) and fourth year talent Becca Fretz '11 (Kunkletown, PA -- Pleasant Valley). Thannhauser scored a team high 18 points and grabbed 8 boards while Fretz added 13 points and a season high 16 rebounds.
Look for EC Basketball to bounce back as they travel to take on E8 opponent RIT on Friday, December 10th. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. in Rochester, NY.
