Elmira, NY – The Elmira College Women's Basketball team took on visiting St. John Fisher College in an Empire 8 battle tonight. The Cardinals of Fisher were looking to pull their record to an even 9-9 while EC was looking for their second win in a row and their second E8 win of the season.
The first half would be played very competitive as both teams would trade leads. At the 4:56 mark in the first, the score was tied at 25 until Fisher went on a 9-to-4 run to end the half giving them a 34-29 lead. Becky Peterman '11 (Glen Gardner, NJ -- Voorhees) steadied the EC offense as she netted 12 points on 4 of 8 shooting including 3 three pointers.
Fisher would build a 14 point lead in the second half but a strong Elmira effort cut the lead down. Elmira would eventually get to within 2 points of the Cardinals with just over three minutes to play. Fisher would stretch the lead to as much as 5 in the remaining three minutes, but a lay-up from Peterman brought EC to within 3 with 26 seconds left to play. With no other options Elmira was forced to foul the Cardinals, sending them to line but clutch free throws down the stretch would prove to be the deciding factor as Elmira dropped a close one at home, 65-60.
Peterman had a monster of a game tonight, dropping a career high 29 points and collecting 8 rebounds to go along with 4 assists. 18 of her 29 came from three point range as went 6-10 from beyond the arc. Rookie Mariah Thannhauser '14 (Newfield, NY -- Newfield) chipped in 12 points off the bench.
