Men’s Soccer Draws 1-1 with St. John Fisher

Elmira, NY – The Elmira College Men's Soccer team remained undefeated as it tied with St. John Fisher Saturday afternoon in Elmira. The Soaring Eagles stand at 9-0-1 overall and 2-0-1 in conference play, while the Cardinals move to 3-6-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the Empire 8.

The two teams played to a scoreless first half. Five minutes into the second half Fisher was controlling possession. Matt Silvi shot a bullet from 18 yards out and Jason Guernsey '12 (Cherry Valley, NY -- Cherry Valley) made a tremendous defensive save hugging the left goal post, saving a would be goal.

In the 52nd minute Edward Michelson '12 (Winsted, CT -- Cheshire) and Andre Germano '15 (Campinas, Brazil -- The Winchendon School) hooked up for a Purple and Gold goal. Michelson took a direct kick from 35 yards out onto a running header by Germano into the open net.

The Cardinals had a significant shots on goal advantage, but the Purple and Gold made their chances count and had a number of great defensive plays. However, their luck wore out with just over three minutes remaining.

Garhett Varin took the ball streaking down the right sideline and fed an open Stefan John in the center of the field. John knocked it home to tie the game at one. The game went into two 10 minute overtime periods with neither team finding any great scoring opportunities.

Jared Micheller '12 (Avon, CT – The Winchendon School) made six stops in net for Elmira, while Kyle Metcalfe finished with three saves for the Cardinals. EC returns to action Wednesday when they visit Daemen College at 4:00 p.m.
