Women’s Volleyball Finishes Well at Susquehanna

Selinsgrove, PA – The Elmira College Women's Volleyball team went 3-1 this weekend at the Susquehanna University Tournament. Suffering only its second loss on the season, the Soaring Eagles were able to keep its composure during the second day of competition.

In the first match the Purple and Gold were clicking on all cylinders as they swept Penn State Berks 25-17, 25-14, 25-21. Sasha Zavadska '13 (Bratislava, SVK -- The British School) and Brittany Raykoske '12 (Johnstown, NY -- Gloversville) led the way with a combined 29 kills, three service aces, seven digs and two blocks. Taryn Rumsey '14 (Mansfield, PA -- Mansfield) and Amanda Matson '13 (Corning, NY -- Corning West) also helped the team with 14 kills, three service aces and 21 digs while Molly Short '13 (Sterling, CO -- Sterling) notched 41 set assists and five digs.

In the second match the Soaring Eagles suffered a tough loss to Susquehanna University in four sets, 25-22, 17-25, 17-25, 20-25. Zavadska led the way with 20 kills and seven digs.   Raykoske and Rumsey combined for 19 kills, seven assists 16 digs and one block. Francene Cicia '13 (Sunderland, MA -- Frontier Regional) and Catherine Miller '14 (Pittsburg, PA -- Penn Hills) had a solid performance combining for one service ace and 25 digs.

In the third match the Soaring Eagles took their frustration out on King's College winning in straight sets, 25-10, 25-10, 25-11. Rumsey, Matson, Raykoske and Zavadska all played extremely well combining for 37 kills, three assists, five service aces, 19 digs and eight blocks.

In the fourth match the Purple and Gold continued their winning beating Albright College in three sets, 25-17, 25-15, 25-16. Zavadska led the team with 15 kills, two assists, three service aces, two digs and one block. Short and Melanie Pershyn'13 (Lakeview, NY -- Frontier) also contributed to the team combining for two kills, 35 assists, two service aces and seven digs. Making it to the Susquehanna All-Tournament Team were Sasha Zavadska '13 and Brittany Raykoske '12. 

EC returns to action Tuesday, October 11th as they host SUNY Cortland at 7:00 pm in a duel match-up.
