Elmira, NY – The Elmira College Women's Basketball team lost another tightly fought game to St. Lawrence University 63-51 Saturday afternoon. The win improves the Saints to 3-2, while the loss drops the Soaring Eagles to 0-6.
The Purple and Gold stayed with the Saints for t going shot for shot. The Saints started the game on an 8-2 run, but the Soaring Eagles would come back tying the game at 11. The Saints would another 9-4 run with less than seven minutes left in the half to go up 28-17. EC would stick around in the half cutting the Saints lead to six with 3:14 left. The Soaring Eagles defense would help it stay in the half and keep the Saints within six points at the half 32-26. Jessica Zoltowski '14 (Erie, PA -- Harbor Creek) and Maria Thannhauser '14 (Newfield, NY -- Newfield) helped EC stay in the first half combining for 17 points and nine rebounds.
In the beginning of the second half the game would go back and forth with both teams trading shots. However, the Saints would start to play tough defense and take an 11 point lead with 14:22 left in the game. The Soaring Eagles would continue to fight with Zoltowski, Liz Forrest '14 (North Walpole, NH -- Fall Mountain) and Darcy James '12 (Castile, NY -- Letchworth Central) making four crucial three pointers to help cut into the Saints lead. The Saints defense would stretch their lead to 19 points with 2:11 left in the game, but EC would stick around playing tough defense. Kelsey Geisler '15 (Staten Island -- St. Peter's) would make a crucial three pointer at 1:11 to cut the Saints lead to 10. The Saints make two free throws and hold onto their lead to finish off the win 63-51.\
Zoltowski led the team in scoring, finishing with 18 points, four rebounds, one block and two steals. James and Thannhauser combined for 17 points and nine rebounds. Forrest finished the game with seven points, eight rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals. She went 2-for-4 from the field and 2-for-3 from the three point line.
Elmira returns to action Sunday at 3:00 p.m. when they host Clarkson University in Speidel Gymnasium.
