Hoboken, NJ -- The Elmira College Women's Volleyball team won two more matches as they defeated Oneonta State and Newbury College Friday night at the Stevens Tournament in Hoboken, New Jersey. The Soaring Eagles (7-0) beat Oneonta 3-2 and Newbury 3-0 to remain undefeated on the year.
In the first match of the night the Purple and Gold faced their first five set match of the season as they prevailed in thrilling fashion (17-25, 25-23, 18-25, 25-17, 15-11). EC combined to pound out 54 kills in the victory. Taryn Rumsey '14 (Mansfield, PA – Mansfield) led the way finishing with 14 kills, 14 digs and two service aces. Brittany Raykoske '12 (Johnstown, NY – Gloversville) contributed 13 kills, five digs and four solo blocks. Sasha Zavadska '13 (Bratislava, SVK – The British School) added 10 kills, 12 digs and two solo blocks. Molly Short '13 (Sterling, CO – Sterling) was an offensive catalyst dishing out 46 assists, while Amanda Matson (Corning, NY -- Corning West) was a force up front compiling nine kills.
In the second match EC found its form as they swept Newbury (25-18, 25-15, 25-7). This allowed some younger players to see more action. Melanie Pershyn (Lakeview, NY – Frontier) registered 20 assists in the match to help spark the offensive attack. Rumsey, Zavadska and Raykoske provided the steady leadership needed combining for 27 kills, seven service aces and 20 digs. Catherine Miller '14 (Pittsburg, PA – Penn Hills) ignited the defense as she racked up eight digs.
The Soaring Eagles continue play today at the Stevens Tournament as they square off with Fairleigh Dickinson at noon and Stevens Tech at 2:00 p.m.
