Elmira, NY – The Elmira College Women's Volleyball team continued to show it is a team to be reckoned with not only in the tough Empire 8 Conference but NCAA Division III as a whole. The Soaring Eagles (12-1 overall, 4-0 Empire 8) remained undefeated in conference play and has sole lead of the conference after the first Empire 8 Crossover Weekend.
EC fought past rival Ithaca College with a 3-1 win (25-18, 19-25, 25-14, 25-21). Sasha Zavadska '13 (Bratislava, SVK -- The British School) led the charge for the Purple and Gold as she registered a phenomenal 23 kills and 10 digs. Taryn Rumsey'14 (Mansfield, PA -- Mansfield) and Catherine Miller '14 (Pittsburg, PA -- Penn Hills) also finished in the double digits in the kills column with 10 and 11, respectively. Brittany Raykoske '12 (Johnstown, NY -- Gloversville) and Amanda Matson '13 (Corning, NY -- Corning West) combined to pound out 17 kills. Molly Short '13 (Sterling, CO -- Sterling) dished out 34 assists for EC.
In the second match of the day the Soaring Eagles swept St. John Fisher 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-21). Zavadska and Raykoske combined for 25 kills and 13 digs, while Rumsey notched 16 digs. Short chipped in another 31 assists to set up the Purple and Gold attack.
EC will have a Purple and Gold game as a part of Parents Weekend Saturday at 11:00 a.m. before hosting Houghton College on Oct. 6 at 7:00 p.m.
