Elmira, NY – The Elmira College Women's Volleyball team had a very successful first day at their own tournament as they won both their matches, 3-0 and 3-1, Friday evening at Speidel Gymnasium. The Soaring Eagles (3-0) took down Hartwick College 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-18) in its first match. EC had great balance as a number of players helped chip in to the victory.
Brittany Raykoske '12 (Johnstown, NY -- Gloversville) and Sasha Zavadska '13 (Bratislava, SVK -- The British School) both registered double digits in kills; 14 and 10, respectively. Raykoske also lasered five service aces. Taryn Rumsey '14 (Mansfield, PA -- Mansfield) and Amanda Matson '13 (Corning, NY -- Corning West) combined for 17 kills and 15 digs. Molly Short '13 (Sterling, CO -- Sterling) had another impressive match at setter as she finished with 38 of the team's 41 assists. In the dig department, seven different players recorded at least one dig, with no one having more than nine. Catherine Miller '14 (Pittsburg, PA -- Penn Hills) recorded three service aces, as the team had 12 in total.
In the second match of the day the Elmira College Women's Volleyball team went down early in the first set against SUNY New Paltz but battled back to catch on fire late and win the first set 25-22. They would go on to win two of the next three as they won 3-1 (25-22, 25-11, 19-25, 25-17).
EC will return to action in day two of the EC Invitational tomorrow as they square off with Utica College at noon and battle with Houghton College at 2:00 p.m.
