Pine Valley, NY – The Elmira College Men's Ice Hockey team used four unanswered goals to down visiting SUNY Morrsiville, 5-1, Friday evening at the Murray Athletics Center. The win improves the Soaring Eagles to 10-5-1 overall, while the loss drops the Mustangs to 2-12-1.
EC got on the board first just over 12 minutes into the first period when
Eric David '15 (Dorval, QUE -- Pembroke Lumber Kings) fired a shot on net from the left wing. There were multiple bodies in front as many players tried to poke home the first score.
Wes Consorti '12 (Brantford, ONT -- Niagara River) eventually found the back of the net with
Colin Hoey '13 (Doylestown, PA -- New England Huskies) and
Regan MacLean '14 (Concord, MA -- Tabor Academy) being credited with assists on the score.
With just over a minute remaining in the opening frame the Mustangs evened the score at one as Geoff Matzel slid a shot under the glove side of Soaring Eagle goaltender
Darren MacDonald '13 (Stittsville, ONT -- Nepean Raiders). Tom Longland and Kevin Gaughran tallied helpers on the goal. The score didn't remain even for long, as 40 seconds later
Jesper Strale '14 (Uppsala, Sweden -- Springfield Pic's) wristed a shot from the high slot top shelf past Mustang netminder Christopher Azzano.
Martin Lee '12 (Toronto, ONT -- Vaughan Vipers) registered an assist on the score that helped EC regain the lead heading into the second period.
Elmira carried its momentum from the late first period goal as it struck first in the second stanza at the 5:26 mark.
David took the puck behind the net and wrapped it around, feeding Strale. He then found
Christian Morissette '12 (Beaconsfield, QUE -- RPI) who lit the lamp giving the Soaring Eagles a 3-1 lead. The Purple and Gold extended their lead midway through the stanza as
Morissette tallied his second straight marker with
Matt Owczarczak '14 (West Seneca, NY -- Buffalo JR Sabers) and
Strale registering helpers on the score. The game remained 4-1 after two periods as EC held a heavy 43-16 shots advantage.
Elmira continued to keep its intensity up throughout the third period generating plenty of opportunities to score and protecting its three-goal lead. EC struck once again with just under one minute remaining when
Brendan Sanders '12 (Mississauga, ONT -- Vaughan Vipers) scored off a feed from
Strale and
Lee. Elmira finished the game with nearly three times as many shots on net, as they outfired the Mustangs 57-20.
MacDonald stopped 19 shots in between the pipes for EC, while Azzano made 52 stops for SUNY Morrsiville.
The Elmira College Men's Ice Hockey team returns to action tomorrow when it has a rematch with the Mustangs, this time at Morrisville at 7:00 p.m.
