Women’s Basketball Falls to Fisher 74-61

 Elmira, NY – The Elmira College Women's Basketball team fell to visiting St. John Fisher College, 74-61, Friday evening in Speidel Gymnasium. The win improves the Cardinals to 9-10 overall and 5-3 in conference competition, while the loss drops the Soaring Eagles to 7-12 overall and 3-5 in Empire 8 play.

Fisher got off to a quick start as they led by as many as 20 points in the first half and took a 34-18 advantage into intermission. No EC player had more than five points in the first half, as the team struggled, shooting at just 23 percent, while the Cardinals converted on 52 percent of their shots. 

The Cardinals led by as many as 25 points midway through the second half. Elmira got the Fisher lead down to 13 points with six minutes left, but it was too little too late as the Cardinals held on for the 74-61 win.

Jessica Zoltowski '14 (Erie, PA -- Harbor Creek) led Elmira with 17 points and six assists, but struggled shooting just 6-for-16 from the field. However, she did convert on 60 percent of her attempts from downtown. Alex Balara '15 (Marlton, NJ -- Gloucester Catholic) added 11 points and four assists, while Maria Thannhauser '14 (Newfield, NY -- Newfield) tallied 10 points. Camaryn Buckner led Fisher with 20 points and seven rebounds, while Sydney Bloomstein and Portia Velasco finished with 17 and 13 points, respectively. Fisher held a 26-16 advantage in points in the paint and outrebounded EC 39-32.

The Elmira College Women's Basketball team returns to action tomorrow when they host Nazareth College in Speidel Gymnasium at 2:00 p.m.
