Elmira, NY -- The Elmira College Women's Basketball team fell to visiting Nazareth College, 68-62, Saturday afternoon in Speidel Gymnasium. The win improves the Golden Flyers to 11-8 overall and 4-5 in the Empire 8, while the loss drops the Soaring Eagles to 7-13 overall and 3-6 in conference competition.
The first half of play was back and forth, with five lead changes and another three ties before the Soaring Eagles took control, leading by as much as eight points. Every player who suited up played in the first half for EC and the scoring showed. All but one player scored in the half and Darcy James'12 (Castile, NY – Letchworth Central) led the team with five points at the half, as EC carried a 28-23 advantage.
The Soaring Eagles came out strong in the second half as they looked to take control of the game. They were able to stretch their lead to 13 just four minutes in, but after that, the Soaring Eagles went cold from the field just as Nazareth started to find their groove. Over the next 11 minutes, Nazareth would go on a 30-16 run to take a one point lead and would never trail again. Elmira would keep the score close, trailing by as little as three with two minutes to play but could not get the lead back, and clutch free throw shooting sealed the victory for the Golden Flyers.
Jessica Zoltowski '14 (Erie, Pa -- Harbor Creek) and Alex Balara '15 (Marlton, NJ -- Gloucester Catholic) led the Soaring Eagles in scoring, contributing 20 and 11 respectively, but shot a combined 8-for-29 from the field. As a team, Elmira College shot just 34 percent from the field and 22 percent from behind the arc.
The Elmira College Women's Basketball team returns to action February 3rd as they go on the road to take on the Ducks of Stevens Tech at 2:00 p.m.
