Rochester, NY – The Elmira College Field Hockey team nearly came back from a two-goal halftime deficit but eventually fell 2-1 Saturday afternoon on the road against Nazareth. The win improves the Golden Flyers to 5-9 overall and 1-4 in Empire 8 competition, while the loss drops the Soaring Eagles to 3-7 overall and 2-3 in conference play.
Nazareth got the scoring started in the 7th minute when Lindsey Smith deflected an Alexis Root shot to give the Golden Flyers the 1-0 lead. The Soaring Eagles had a chance to tie it up but Naz keeper Shannon Winney made two diving stops. Late in the first half Tessa Knapp collected a loose ball in front of the cage and scored to give Nazareth a 2-0 halftime lead. Naz held an 8-3 shots and 6-3 shots on goal advantage in the first period. However, EC held a distinct 5-1 penalty corner edge in the opening 35 minutes.
In the second half Elmira fought hard to try and make a comeback in a hostile environment on the road. Despite being outshot 9-4 and a 5-3 disadvantage on shots on target the Purple and Gold got on the board in the 53rd minute.
Sarah Harden-Marshall '14 (Marathon, NY -- Marathon) tallied an unassisted marker, her fourth of the season. Despite the valiant second half effort Elmira could not manage to find the equalizer as it fell 2-1.

Ashley Palmer '16 (Verona, NY -- Vernon-Verona-Sherrill),
Allie Gilbert '16 (Machias, NY -- Pioneer) and
Erin Duffy '14 (Nashua, NH -- Nashua) each recorded one shot on target apiece.
Lauren Thomas '14 (Marshfield, MA -- Marshfield) stopped nine shots in goal for Elmira, while Winney made five saves in the win for Nazareth.
The EC Field Hockey team returns to action Monday when it travels to Allentown, PA to take on Cedar Crest starting at 4:00 p.m.
