Women’s Soccer Ends Season with 2-1 Upset of Stevens on Senior Day

Box Score Elmira, NY – The Elmira College Women's Soccer team honored its five seniors with a 2-1 upset win against visiting Stevens Institute of Technology to end its season in grand fashion Saturday afternoon on Campus Field. The win improves the Soaring Eagles to 5-11-1 overall and 3-4 in the Empire 8, while the loss drops the Ducks to 10-6-1 overall and 5-3 in conference competition.

Megan Lowe '13, Ellie Hamilton '13, Kelsey Kiel '13, Laura Bartus '13 and Kristyn O'Rourke '13 were all honored prior to the match for their years of dedication to the EC Women's Soccer program.

The Ducks came out attacking from the start as Lowe made five big saves in net for EC to start the contest. The Purple and Gold struck first off a quick snipe attack. Kimi Girmus '16 took a throw in on the left sideline to Kiel. She took a couple dribbles and played a cross to an oncoming Emily Karpinski '14 who hit a running header off the crossbar and in for the 1-0 lead.

Lowe continued to be a fortress in net stopping anything that came her way. The Ducks finally got on the board with just over four minutes remaining in the half. Ann Heine ran in on a breakaway beating a Soaring Eagle defender and placing a shot into the right side netting. Stevens held a 17-4 shots and 12-1 shots on goal edge in the opening half as Lowe made 11 saves.

In the 63rd minute the Soaring Eagles regained the lead once again. Emily Kelly '14 played a quick give and go to the middle to Kelsie Dekarski '14 who fed it back to Kelly on the left wing. Kelly played a perfect cross to Hamilton cutting down the right side who beat Duck keeper Melissa Murphy top shelf near post for what would be the eventual game-winner.

Lowe finished with an incredible 14 saves in net in the win for Elmira, while Murphy stopped two shots in goal for Stevens. The Ducks held a 15-4 shots on goal advantage in the contest, but Lowe along with some timely counterattacks proved crucial for the Soaring Eagle win.
