Two Late Sage Goals Down Men’s Soccer

Box Score

Elmira, NY – The Sage Colleges used two late second half goals to complete a second half comeback downing host Elmira College 2-1 Sunday afternoon on Campus Field in Elmira. The win improves the Gators to 11-1, while the loss drops the Soaring Eagles to 9-3.

Neither team could find the back of the net in the opening half. With four minutes remaining EC had a golden chance as Tre Ming '16 crossed it to Ryan Limero '14, but Gator keeper TJ Zehner made the save. The Purple and Gold held an 8-5 shots and 4-2 shots on goal advantage in the opening half.

Jared Cipriano '14 had two great shots on target in the first 10 minutes of the second half but Zehner was up to the task stopping both attempts. In the 61st minute Cameron Ware '13 played a beautiful ball into the box where Jackson Correia '14 redirected a header off the crossbar. Six minutes later after a Sage defender committed a penalty in the box, Alexander Poole '13 converted a penalty kick for the 1-0 lead.

Sage responded in the 73rd minute when Gustavo Trinidad played a through ball from left to center to Scott Jarosz. Jarosz quickly one-timed a shot on the run beating a charging Jordan Dougherty '16. With three minutes remaining the Gators struck again, this time off a set piece. Kevin Dommreis lobbed a kick into the box where the ball bounced once and Jarosz headed in his 17th goal of the season. The marker proved to be the game-winner as EC couldn't quite find the back of the net in the final minutes.

Elmira held a 21-10 and 12-5 shots on goal advantage, however Sage put 40 percent of its shots on goal in the back of the net. The Soaring Eagles also had a huge 8-1 edge in corner kicks. Poole, Limero and Cipriano each had two shots apiece on target, while six other players had a shot on goal apiece. Jarosz paced the Gators with two shots on goal, both of which found the back of the net. Dougherty stopped three shots in the loss for Elmira, while Zehner made 11 saves for Sage.

The EC Men's Soccer team returns to action Wednesday when it hosts non-conference foe Daemen College starting at 4:00 p.m. on Campus Field.
