Towanda, PA – The Elmira College Women's Basketball team held an early lead but could not quite fight its way back late as it fell, 65-60, to host Keystone College Saturday afternoon. The win improves the Giants to 1-1, while the Soaring Eagles fall to 0-2.
Elmira held an 18-12 advantage midway through the opening half after a
Maria Thannhaser '14 layup. The Giants responded with a 6-0 run to tie the game at 18 all 12 minutes into the contest. Keystone used a mini spurt near the end of the half to take a 32-28 lead into intermission.
Early in the second half the Soaring Eagles tied the game at two different points but could never manage to regain the lead. Midway through the frame the Giants used an 8-0 run to extend its lead to 50-39, the largest lead for either team in the contest.
EC got within three at 56-53 with 2:54 remaining after a pair of
Liz Forrest '14 free throws. Keystone extended its lead back to seven with just over two minutes to play, but after a
Thannhauser jumper with 1:19 left the Purple and Gold were back within three. She missed a free throw for the potential three-point play but
Forrest corralled an offensive rebound. However, Elmira was unable to convert with the extra possession and four clutch free throws from Keystone's Tiana Cuttino sealed the Giant win.
Thannhauser paced EC with 16 points and eight rebounds, while
Jessica Zoltowski '14 added 15 points and seven boards, but suffered a game-high seven turnovers.
Alex Balara '15 tallied 11 points and eight rebounds, while
Forrest chipped in with four points and a team-high nine snatches on the glass. Jazmyn Robinson pumped in a team-high 14 points, while Cuttino recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Giants.
Keystone held a 30-18 edge in points in the paint and a decisive 33-9 advantage in bench points. Both teams hauled in 48 rebounds and committed 17 turnovers. The Giants shot 36 percent from the field, while the Soaring Eagles converted 30 percent of their shot attempts.
The EC Women's Basketball team returns to action November 25th when it travels to Aurora, NY to take on Wells College starting at 4:00 p.m.
