Men’s Hockey Holds Off Blue Knights for 4-3 Victory

Geneseo, NY – The Elmira College Men's Ice Hockey team took a two-goal lead after one period and held on late for a 4-3 win against SUNY Geneseo Friday evening on the road. The win improves the Soaring Eagles to 2-2 overall, while the loss drops the Blue Knights to 2-3.
 
Elmira got on the board first nine minutes in as Tyler Campbell '13 and Tommy Sumi '16 assisted a Josh Burnell '15 power play score. Three minutes later Carter Shinkaruk '16 recorded his first collegiate goal off assists from classmates Michael Collins '16 and Rob Simpson '16.
 
At the 12:52 mark of the opening period the Blue Knights got on the board to bring the deficit to just one. Colin de Jersey lit the lamp off passes from Jack Caradonna and Ryan Bulach. With less than a minute remaining in a high scoring first frame Collins broke into the offensive zone tallying an unassisted short-handed marker to give the Soaring Eagles a 3-1 lead heading into the first intermission.
 
Just 15 seconds into the second period Geneseo regained the momentum when Zachary Vit scored with the extra skater. Garry Childerhose and Jack Caradonna were credited with assists on the play. At the 7:26 mark of the frame Elmira responded once again as Greg Whittle '16 and Collins tallied helpers on a Jesper Strale '14 score. The Purple and Gold carried a 4-2 edge into the third period.
 
The Blue Knights added a Bulach score just over 13 minutes into the third period off passes from Rich Manley and Kaz Iwamoto. Geneseo pulled the goalie with 35 seconds left but the EC defense held on for the 4-3 victory.
 
Darren MacDonald '13 made 27 saves in the win for the Soaring Eagles, while Adrian Rubeniuk stopped 20 shots in net for Geneseo.
 
Elmira returns to action tomorrow when it hosts the College at Brockport at 7:00 p.m. at the Murray Athletic Center.
