Canton, NY -- The Elmira College Women's Basketball team fell, 79-63, to host St. Lawrence University after the Saints used a strong first half shooting performance Saturday afternoon in Burkman Gymnasium. The win improves the Saints to 2-3 overall, while the loss drops the Soaring Eagles to 3-3.
St. Lawrence shot 57 percent in the opening stanza as it took a double figure lead that the Soaring Eagles were unable to overcome. Elmira jumped out to an early 7-2 lead before entering a 9:00 minute scoreless drought. Meanwhile, the Saints were 16-of-28 from the floor and took a 44-23 lead into halftime.
St. Lawrence led by as many as 27 points in the second half, but the Purple and Gold outscored the Saints 11-1 in the final 4:39. Elmira held a distinct 20-9 advantage in second chance points, while St. Lawrence outscored EC 36-3 off the bench.
Jessica Zoltowski '14 paced EC with a double-double performance with 24 points, 13 rebounds and five steals.
Maria Thannhauser '14 added 19 points and eight rebounds, while classmate
Liz Forrest '14 had 12 points and seven rebounds.
Kelly Legg had a team-high 16 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore Kara McDuffee added 11 points and three assists for St. Lawrence. Sophomore Ali Cady tallied 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists, and each member of the Saints' squad contributed points offensively.
The EC Women's Basketball team opens conference play Tuesday night when it travels to take on Ithaca College starting at 6:00 p.m.
