Women’s Basketball Drops Final Contest to Saxons

Alfred, NY – The Elmira College Women's Basketball team lost its final regular season contest to host Alfred University, 65-57, on Saturday afternoon. This improves the Saxons to 8-17 overall and 1-13 in conference, while the loss drops the Soaring Eagles to 8-17 overall and 4-10 in conference.
Alfred came out ready to play going on a 7-0 run in the first three minutes of the game. The Soaring Eagles finally came to life around four minutes in and took a one point lead near the six minute mark. The game would go back-and-forth until EC went on a 9-2 run with three minutes left in the half. The Saxons battled back and were able to cut the EC lead down to three, 26-23, going into halftime. Liz Forrest '14 (North Walpole, NH -- Fall Mountain) was the leading scorer for EC in the first half recording 12 points and six rebounds, while Jessica Zoltowski '14 (Erie, PA -- Harbor Creek) followed right behind with 11 points.
In the beginning of the second half the game became tight with neither team gaining more than a five point lead. However, the Soaring Eagle offense started to click and it was able to stretch the lead to seven points with less than nine minutes left in the game. The Saxons did not quit and eventually tied the game at 54-54 with 5:25 left to play. Alfred was then able to gain an eight point lead to end the game and hold off Elmira, 65-57, for their first conference win.
Zoltowski finished the game with 17 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals, while Forrest finished with 14 points, seven boards and two helpers. Also playing well for EC was Kelsey Geisler '15 (Staten Island, NY -- St. Peter's) who finished with nine points shooting 75 percent from the three point line and 60 percent from the field. Grace Williamson led the Saxons with a double-double, tallying 18 points and 13 rebounds.
