Elmira, NY -- The Elmira College Women's Basketball team struggled offensively in the second half, falling to visiting Nazareth College, 63-50, Friday night. The loss drops the Soaring Eagles to 5-8 overall and 1-3 in the Empire 8 play, while the win improves the Golden Flyers to 4-9 overall and 1-2 in conference.
Despite Nazareth leading for almost the entire first half, it was a closely fought battle for the first 20 minutes of play. Nazareth jumped out to an early 16-8 advantage, but Elmira was able to get back into the game behind stout defensive play holding the Golden Flyers to 42 percent shooting in the half. Nazareth took a 31-27 lead into the locker room.
The second half was a different story for both teams. Elmira quickly cut the lead to two, 31-29 but that was as close as the Soaring Eagles would get. Nazareth proceeded to go on a 17-2 run over the next 4 minutes to take control of the game. Elmira tried to get back into the contest, but the Nazareth defense limited the Soaring Eagles to just 28 percent from the field and 10 percent from three-point land, while the Golden Flyers shot a blistering 63 percent from the field in the second half.
The Soaring Eagles were led in scoring by
Liz Forrest '14 and
Jessica Zoltowski '14 with 14 and 10 points, respectively. Lindsey Kelly's 17 points and seven rebounds were highs for all Nazareth players on the night.
The Soaring Eagles return to action tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Houghton, NY to take on Houghton College. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
