Women’s Basketball Wins in Season Opener

The Elmira College women's basketball team (1-0) picked up a win in their season opener 67-58 against Manhattanville College (0-1) in the first day of the Emerson College Tip-Off Tournament. Jessica Zoltowski '14 led the Soaring Eagles with 25 points, nine rebounds, three assists and one steal in the victory.

Despite trailing 6-0 in the opening minutes of the game the EC women regrouped and battled back and Purple and Gold found themselves in a tie-game after Maria Thannhauser '14 easily made a free-throw with 14:48 remaining in the first half.  As both sides battled for the rest of the half Elmira found themselves up by one when Liz Forrest '14 made a layup to hold a 18-17 lead with 8:38 left in the first half.  The Purple and Gold would take a 36-30 lead going into half time. Thannhauser and Forrest led the Soaring Eagles in the first half with 23 of the team's 36 points.

The EC women didn't look back in the second half as they retained the lead the rest of the game. In the second half Zoltowski scored 19 of her 25 points to help solidify the Soaring Eagles win in their season opener. The EC women had 16 offensive boards in today's game and a total of 16 second chance points.

The Purple and Gold will play in the Championship game of the Emerson College Tip-Off Tournament tomorrow where they will compete against Emerson College, game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
