Women’s Basketball Falls To Emerson In Final Game of the Tip-Off Tournament

The Elmira College women's basketball team (1-1) fell to Emerson College (2-0) 58-53 in the Championship Game of the Emerson College Tip-Off Tournament.  Jessica Zoltowski '14 and Liz Forrest '14 both earned All-Tournament recognition for their efforts over the weekend. Zoltowski led the Soaring Eagles with 13 points, eight caroms, three assists and two steals in today's action while Forrest posted 11 points, nine rebounds and one assist in today's action.

After a scoreless couple of minutes in the game Meghan Loya '16 made a free-throw and followed with an easy lay-up to spark an 11-2 run for the Purple and Gold. However Emerson regrouped after the slow start and went on an 8-2 run, with the EC women holding a 12-10 lead halfway through the first half. Both teams battled the rest of the half but Elmira would hold the 27-23 advantage going into halftime. Alex Balara '15 and Forrest led the Purple and Gold offensively in the first half with seven points apiece. Balara also pulled down six boards while Zoltowski tallied four rebounds in the half.

Emerson regrouped in the locker room and tied the game just 1:30 into the second half. After neither team scoring in the next minute and a half Kelsey Geisler '15 made a jumper to put Elmira back into the lead. Zoltowski would give EC their biggest lead in the second half with seven after draining a three-pointer with 13:39 left in the game. The Lions would answer by scoring 13 straight points to lead Elmira by six with just over 11 minutes left in the game. A free-throw by Forrest and a three-pointer by Zoltowski would cut Emerson's lead down to just two with 9:18 left in the game.  Emerson would once again regroup and put up nine unanswered points before a pair of free-throws made by Zoltowski would break up the streak.  The EC women battled the rest of the game but could only cut the Lion's lead to five points by the end of the game. Zoltowski scored 11 of her 13 points in the second half of the game while Geisler scored all 11 of her points in the later half. Forrest pulled down 8 of her nine rebounds in the second half as well.

Elmira will only have a couple days rest as they will travel to SUNY Cortland this Tuesday, November 19th, tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
