Rochester, NY -- The Elmira College men's ice hockey team (4-4-0, 3-2-0 ECAC West) scored five goals in the second period to all but seal a 6-3 win over the Golden Flyers of Nazareth College (1-5-1, 0-5-1 ECAC West).  Carter Shinkaruk '16 and Jesper Strale '14 led Elmira with three points apiece to give the Purple and Gold their second straight win of the season.

Elmira's power play unit showed once again tonight how lethal they can be as EC went 3-for-6 on power play opportunities.  Defensively, Sal Magliocco '17 made 26 saves as he picked up his fourth win of the year.

Tonight's five goal outburst in the second period is the most EC has scored in a single period since last year's game against the Golden Flyers, where similar to tonight, EC trailed at the first intermission but rallied with five second period goals for a 9-5 win.

Nazareth took an early lead in tonight's game as they scored the opening goal with just 46 seconds left in the first period.  Elmira responded in the second period with a power play score by Strale, tying the game at one apiece.  However, the Golden Flyers tallied two straight goals to take a 3-1 lead with just under 10 minutes to play in the second period.

With a two goal deficit, Elmira's offense woke up as they broke the game wide open by scoring five unanswered goals en route to the 6-3 win.  Alexander Taulien '17 sparked the Elmira rally by scoring the first goal of his collegiate career, unassisted.

Shinkaruk followed Taulien's score with his first of two goals, with his final score of the game coming in the third period.  Michael Collins '16 and Eric David '15 would score the next two Elmira goals in the second period as all three EC scores were registered in less than four minutes.

Elmira will look to make it three straight wins tomorrow night as the Soaring Eagles host Nazareth College in the second leg of their home-and-home series.  The game puck is scheduled to drop at 7:00 p.m. at the Murray Athletic Center in Pine Valley, NY.
