Box Score Pine Valley, NY – The EC Men's Hockey team was able to hold off the Nazareth College Golden Flyers, 5-2, Saturday evening on the Class of 2013 Recognition night at the Murray Athletic Center. The Soaring Eagles improve to 10-12-0 overall and 5-7-0 in ECAC West action, while the Golden Flyers fall to 6-14-1 overall and 1-10-0 in conference play.
The Soaring Eagles were able to get on the board early with a score at the 8:58 mark of the first period when
Jarryd ten Vaanholt '16 found the back of the goal with classmates
Michael Collins '16 and
Greg Whittle '16 helping out on the play. EC was able to extend its lead to 2-0 at the 17:47 mark when Senior
Colin Hoey '13 put it past Naz goaltender Ed Zdolshek for the score.
Mark Morikawa '13 and
Jesper Strale '14 assisted on the goal.
In the second period the game became tense with the Soaring Eagles getting the upper hand in shots on goal, but no one could find the back of the net keeping it at 2-0.
In the final period of play both teams were able to capitalize on several offensive opportunities. The Soaring Eagles were able to stretch out its lead to 4-0 with scores from
ten Vanaholt and
Morikawa at the 2:28 and 6:14 marks. The Golden Flyers were able to fight back with Tom Servalli and Mark Zavorin each scoring a goal at the 9:29 and 12:43 marks. However, the Purple and Gold were able to hold off the Golden Flyers late with an empty net goal at the 18:39 mark with
D'Arcy Oakes '13 passed it up to
Josh Burnell '15 for the easy score.
Darren MacDonald '13 earned the win for EC on his final home ice appearance making 21 saves, while Zdolshek suffered the loss for Naz making 28 saves.
The EC Men's Hockey team will return to action Friday, February 8 and Saturday, February 9 when it hits the road for two conference battles. Friday the Soaring Eagles will travel to Aston, PA to take on Neumann University starting at 7:00 p.m. Saturday the Purple and Gold will travel to Stamford, CT to take on Manhattanville College starting at 7:00 p.m.
