Wilkes-Barre, PA -- The Elmira College women's soccer team (1-1) fell on the road 2-1 tonight against the Lady Monarchs of King's College (3-0).
Janine Swanson '14 scored late in the second half on a penalty kick but it would not be enough as the Soaring Eagles dropped their first game of the 2013 season.
Neither team was able to breakthrough for a score in the first half in large part due to the play of rookie goalkeeper
Amanda Banner '17, who, made her first collegiate start in net for the Purple and Gold. Banner came up with her biggest save of her early career at the 13:09 mark when she denied Erin Laird '16 of a goal by snagging a blast in traffic from six yards out. This would be one of her four saves of the night.
The Lady Monarchs wasted little time in the second half as they scored the game's opening goal at the 47:10 mark. King's would add to their lead in the 70th minute with another goal, giving them a two goal cushion.
However, the final 20 minutes would be controlled by the Soaring Eagles as EC outshot King's 4-to-0 and also held the advantage in corner kicks, 1-0. The EC pressure would prove to be beneficial as the Purple and Gold were awarded a penalty kick in the 73rd minute. Unfortunately for Elmira, opposing goalie Jessica Natale '16 would make a diving save on the penalty kick to maintain the 2-0 lead.
Elmira would eventually cut the lead to one late in the second half as Swanson scored her first goal of the year by converting on penalty kick at the 89:50 mark. However, EC was unable to complete the comeback as time expired, resulting in a 2-1 loss.
"Lessons have been learned from today" said head coach
Ashley Bingaman. "We will get better, not bitter." The Soaring Eagles will have little time to reflect on tonight's loss as they get right back at on Sunday, September 8th as EC hosts SUNY Potsdam for a 1:00 p.m. game on Campus Field in Elmira, NY.
