Box Score | Post-Game Interview
Elmira, NY -- Four different Soaring Eagles tallied goals on the day en route to a 4-2 win over visiting SUNY Potsdam.
Kimi Girmus '16 recorded her first career goal for the game-winning score with 10:19 left in the contest. The win improves Elmira College to 2-1 and drops SUNY Potsdam to 1-3 on the year.
Elmira College came out in the first half determined to bounce back from their loss against King's College Friday night. The Soaring Eagles applied pressure offensively from the opening kickoff, keeping the ball on the offensive half of the field for much of the first half.
The pressure paid off just 15 minutes into the game as EC would score off one of one of the 11 corner kicks they had on the day.
Kelsie DeKarski '14 sent the corner kick into the box where it was controlled by
Janine Swanson '14. With the defense and Bears keeper, Sara Livecchi '17, closing in on her, Swanson kept her composure and found her teammate,
Mollie Hamilton '15 in front of the net for the easy goal. Hamilton's fourth goal of the season gave Elmira a 1-0 lead.
The Soaring Eagles would strike again just seven minutes later when
Caitlyn Criscuolo '14 tallied her first goal of the year. Swanson sent a long through ball up the field towards a streaking Criscuolo who used her breakaway speed to get behind the defense. Criscuolo controlled the ball at her feet, took a touch, and then fired a shot into the lower left corner to give EC a 2-0 lead.
Potsdam would not go away, however, as they fought back to record their first goal of the game in the 37th minute. After earning a free kick in the offensive half of the field, Kaylen Van Wagner '17 sent the ball into the box where teammate, Summer Bader '16, finished with a header into the upper right corner of the net. The score would hold at 2-1 at the half.
The game stayed at 2-1 for much of the second half, but the last 10-plus minutes provided all the action the fans were looking for. With 10:19 left on the clock, Girmus got in on the scoring action as she tallied her first career goal and gave Elmira a 3-1 lead. The defender took possession of the ball and took a shot on net from about 30 yards out. What looked like a routine save for Livecchi turned into a goal when the ball bounced just in front of the keeper and kicked up through her hands.
Potsdam would again cut the Elmira lead to one, this time with 4:10 left on the clock. Bader would tally her second goal of the day, this time scoring with her foot with a high, bending kick that was just out of reach of Elmira goalie,
Amanda Banner '17. Banner got her fingertips on the ball but could not do much with it as the ball still found the back of the net.
The game was sealed when newcomer,
Meagan Fullen '17, registered her first career goal just 43 seconds after the Potsdam goal. Swanson recorded her third assist on the day as she sent the ball into the box from EC's free kick. Despite the ball bouncing in the six-yard box, Fullen never gave up on the play and was able to flick her header past the unexpecting Livecchi. The game would end in a 4-2 victory.
The Soaring Eagles outshot Potsdam 24-14 and earned seven more corner kicks than the Bears (11-4). Banner made two saves on the day for her first career victory.
Elmira College will be back in action Friday, September 13th when they travel to the North Country to take on Clarkson University. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
