Pine Valley, NY --
The Elmira College men's ice hockey team (7-6-0) made a big statement tonight as the Soaring Eagles shocked No. 11 nationally ranked SUNY Geneseo (10-3-0), 5-1.  EC's four goal win over the Knights of SUNY Geneseo is Elmira's second win over a nationally ranked team this season.

EC netminder Sal Magliocco '17 picked up the win in today's contest, his sixth win of the season.  Magliocco shined in net tonight, making 35 saves, including several important saves in the first period as he denied all 18 shots by the Knights.

Jarryd ten Vaanholt '16 and Greg Whittle '16 also had great performances for the Purple and Gold.  ten Vaanholt scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner while Whittle recorded a career high three assists on the night.

Elmira wasted little time getting things started in today's contest as Carter Shinkaruk '16 netted the game's opening goal just 42 seconds into the game.  Tommy Sumi '16 setup the Elmira goal as his initial shot caromed off the Geneseo goaltender's pad and was left sitting in the slot where Shinkaruk punched it home into the right side of the net. Josh Burnell '15 also picked up an assist on the game's opening goal which would hold up through the first period as the Soaring Eagles took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.

The Soaring Eagles upped their lead to 3-0 in the second period behind goals from ten Vaanholt and Brian Depp '16.  ten Vaanholt's game-winner came on a cross-ice pass from Michael Collins '16, a pass that ten Vaanholt would bury top-shelf at the 9:44 mark of the period.  Then, with 2:20 left in the second period, Depp made good on a saucer pass from Jesper Strale '14, scoring EC's third goal of the night.  Credit Shinkaruk for setting up the goal as his big hit by the Geneseo bench took out the Knight's defender, exposing Geneseo's goalie to the Elmira attack.

SUNY Geneseo would get on the board on a power play opportunity at the 5:02 mark of the third period.  However, Elmira would answer with a power play goal from Burnell, reclaiming a three goal edge. Burnell's goal was setup by precise passing as Whittle dumped the puck to Sumi behind the net, which would allow Sumi to sneak a pass through the middle of the ice, just outside the crease to Burnell, who would bury the shot into the open net.

Elmira's final goal of the night came at the 16:13 mark as ten Vaanholt picked up his second tally of the night.  His goal was setup by Whittle, who earned his third assist on the night and Collins who picked up his second assist of the contest.

The Purple and Gold will have a few days to enjoy tonight's win as Elmira makes the short trip to Cortland, NY to take on the Cortland State Red Dragons on Tuesday, January 14th in a 7:00 p.m. non-conference game.
