Pittsford, NY --
The Elmira College women's basketball (11-3, 4-1 E8) team experienced something tonight they had not felt in two months, a loss, as the Soaring Eagles fell to St. John Fisher College (10-6, 3-3 E8) 67-40. The loss snaps EC's 10 game win streak and gives Elmira their first blemish in Empire 8 Conference play.

Jessica Zoltowski '14 led the Purple and Gold with 20 points and seven rebounds on the night, but she was the only Soaring Eagle in double-figures as EC could not get going offensively. Alex Balara '15 was next in scoring with seven points and led the team with three steals.

Overall, Elmira shot 23 percent from the floor, including 14 percent in the second half as St. John Fisher took control of the game. Despite their shooting woes, the women were able to get to the free throw line as EC had more made free throws (14) than made field goals (12).

The Soaring Eagles got off to a slow start offensively as St. John Fisher scored the first eight points of the game. Elmira was able to get some offense and brought the Cardinal lead down to three points after a Maria Thannhauser '14 jumper with five minutes to play in the first half, but Portia Velasco answered right back with a three-pointer to make it a six-point game. St. John Fisher would score the final five points of the half to take a 32-23 lead into halftime.

The Purple and Gold struggled to get things going in the second half as they missed their first 11 shots from the field, scoring just one point from a Zoltowski free throw. St. John Fisher, on the other hand, heated up offensively and blew open a 27 point lead, 51-24, with 12:25 to play in the game. The Soaring Eagles did everything they could to get back into the game, but the deficit was too much to overcome as EC fell 67-40 to the Cardinals.

The women have a few days to before their next matchup as they welcome Ithaca College to Speidel Gymnasium on Tuesday, January 28th for the Gold Rush game. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
