Elmira, NY -- The Elmira College women's basketball team will look to get back in the win column tomorrow, January 28th as the Soaring Eagles host the Bombers of Ithaca College in an Empire 8 showdown. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. at Speidel Gymnasium in Elmira, NY.
First Time in a Long Time
The Soaring Eagles suffered a 67-40 defeat on the road to St. John Fisher College, snapping Elmira's 10-game win streak. Elmira's loss is their first in over two months, with their last defeat occurring on November 19, 2013 when EC fell on the road to Cortland State by a very similar score, 68-41.
Second Half Struggle
Against St. John Fisher, Elmira had troubles scoring the basketball, totaling just 17 points on 4-of-28 shooting for a field goal percentage of 14.3. Elmira's 17 second half points is their lowest of the season and only the second time this season EC has not scored 26 or more points in the second half.
Rebound Margin
Elmira was out-rebounded by St. John Fisher 45-29. It is the second largest negative rebound margin of the season for the Soaring Eagles, and the seventh time in total they have been out-rebounded.
Winning the Turnover Battle
For the ninth time this season, Elmira came out on the positive end of the turnover battle in EC's loss to St. John Fisher. Elmira limited their turnovers to 15 while forcing the Cardinals to make 19 of their own. The Soaring Eagles are 7-2 when they force more turnovers than they make this season. Elmira also ranks second in the Empire 8 Conference in turnover margin (4.21).
Double-Digit Scoring Streak
Jessica Zoltowski '14 has scored double-digits in all of Elmira's 14 games this season and dating back to last year, the senior has eclipsed the double-digit threshold in 21 straight games.
10-Made from the Stripe
Zoltowski was sent to the free throw line 13 times in Elmira's game against St. John Fisher. Of her 13 attempts, Zoltowski knocked down 10 of them. It marked the sixth time in her career she has made 10 or more free throws. Her single-game career high is 13-made free throws which dates back to January 14, 2012 against Nazareth College.
Thief!
Alex Balara '15 had three steals against St. John Fisher. It is the sixth time this season she has recorded three or more steals in a single-game. In those games, Elmira is 5-1.
Let the Countdown Begin
Zoltowski has been on her way to becoming Elmira's all-time leader scorer. With 1,375 career points, she is just 82 points from moving into a tie with EC's current all-time leading scorer, Mary Kay Babcock '82, and just 83 points away from becoming Elmira's sole leader in career points. If Zoltowski is able to maintain her scoring average of 21 points per game, she would be on pace to break the all-time scoring record during Elmira's game against Alfred University on Tuesday, February 4th.
Durability is an Understatement
Zoltowski and
Liz Forrest '14 have been logging a great deal of minutes this season. Zoltowski is averaging 35.6 minutes per game, second most in the Empire 8 Conference. Forrest is averaging 33.0 minutes per game which is fifth most in the conference. Elmira is one of two institutions to have two players inside the top five in the conference in minutes per game.
