Elmira, NY -- The EC men's ice hockey team will play their first games of the New Year this weekend against non-conference opponents, Buffalo State and No. 11 SUNY Geneseo. The Soaring Eagles have an opportunity to avenge one of their previous losses on Friday at the Buffalo State Ice Arena before returning home for their fourth ranked opponent of the season.
EC in the New Year
Friday marks the first contest of 2014 for the Soaring Eagles. EC has had decent success in first games of the New Year over the last 14 years, going 7-5-2, however, the Purple and Gold have not won their first game of the New Year since January 2, 2010 when EC defeated the Milwaukee School of Engineering by a score of 4-2.
The Nation's No. 1 Power Play Attack
EC has found continued success when awarded a man-up situation, registering 18 power play goals in 56 chances. The 32.1 percent success rate ranks the Soaring Eagles as the top power play unit in all of NCAA Division III Men's Ice Hockey.
Burnell's No. 2
Josh Burnell '15 has tallied five power play goals this season, placing him second in all of NCAA Division III Men's Ice Hockey in power play goals scored.
Closing the Door Late
The first period has not been kind to the Soaring Eagles this season having been outscored 13-7 in the first 20 minutes. EC faced a similar situation in their last game against Fitchburg State, trailing 1-0 after the first period of play but EC rallied to score four goals in the next two periods to pull out the 4-3 victory.
Four Near the Top
The Soaring Eagles boast four of the best scorers in the ECAC West Conference through the first six games of conference play.
Josh Burnell '15,
Carter Shinkaruk '16,
Jesper Strale '14, and
Jarryd ten Vaanholt '16 each have recorded seven points and are tied for third in conference scoring with a 1.17 points per game average. EC is the only ECAC West team to have more than two players rank in the top-10 in scoring.
Three Out of Four
It took a few games for first-year talent
Alexander Taulien '17 to get his legs under him, but since scoring his first career goal against Nazareth College on November 22nd, the forward has gone on a little scoring tear, tallying two additional goals and an assist over his last three games. The forward netted a goal in EC's 3-2 win over Nazareth on November 23rd before recording an assist and his first game-winning goal against Fitchburg State.
