Elmira, NY -- Coming off a heartbreaking 5-4 loss to Wilkes University, the Elmira College field hockey team is getting ready to travel to Rochester, NY to take on St. John Fisher College on Saturday, October 18th at 5:00 p.m.
Last Time OutSarah McCaffrey '18 got EC on the scoreboard first against Wilkes after converting a penalty stroke opportunity.
Alli Gilbert '16, who was taken down on a breakaway to earn the penalty shot, made it 2-0 by finishing a two-on-none breakaway with a one-timer at the back post. The Colonels responded with two goals, one before and one after halftime, to even things up at 2-2. But
Emma Miklinski '17 scored to put the Soaring Eagles ahead again, 3-2 lead. Wilkes would score three unanswered goals to take a 5-3 lead with 9:51 left to play. Late in regulation play, Miklinski found Gilbert, who scored her second goal of the game, making it 5-4, but EC ran out of time before they could score the equalizer.
Scoring FrenzyAfter a slow start, scoring seven goals in nine games, the EC women have seemingly found a way to put the ball in the cage as of late, scoring seven goals in the past three games three games. Against Stevens Institute of Technology on October 11th, the EC women scored one goal and then, on the next day, scored two more against Hartwick College. The Soaring Eagles scored a season-high four goals against Wilkes University on October 14th.
Moving On UpGilbert is leading the EC women in every offensive category this season, coming in with 12 points on five goals and two assists. The third-year standout is also climbing the ladder on a couple of career marks. With 20 career goals and 45 career-points, she has moved into fourth place in both statistical categories. She sits one goal and nine points behind former teammate
McKenna Light '14 for third all-time on both lists.
Scouting St. John FisherThe Cardinals of St. John Fisher College come into Saturday's action with a 9-4 overall record and a 5-0 mark in the Empire 8 Conference. St. John Fisher will present a balanced attack as three players have recorded 26 points this season. Emily Markarian and Elizabeth Cusack have both scored 12 goals and added two assists while Stacie Skidmore has posted 10 goals and six assists this season. On the defensive side, Danielle Famolaro leads the team with 96 saves and a 2.12 goals against average.
On the HorizonThe Purple and Gold will compete next on Saturday, October 25th when they take on Empire 8 Conference foe Houghton College at 1:00 p.m. This game will be the 2014 home finale for the EC women.
