Elmira, NY -- The Elmira College women's basketball team has a pair of crucial Empire 8 games on the docket for this weekend as they look to secure their spot in the conference tournament. The Soaring Eagles will travel to nearby Ithaca College on Friday, February 14th for an 8:00 p.m. game before returning home for Class of 2014 recognition day on Saturday, February 15th against Nazareth College.
1,000 Points on the Horizon
With her 11-point performance against Penn Tech on Wednesday,
Maria Thannhauser '14 now stands just 21 points from scoring 1,000 career points. She is on track to eclipse the 1,000-point milestone on Saturday against Nazareth College, which happens to be senior day, and once she hits the plateau, Thannhauser will become the fifth player in Elmira College history to score 1,000 career points.
Two More Records Fall
Jessica Zoltowski '14 knocked down 6-of-7 from the free throw line against Penn Tech, but she only needed one to set two additional Elmira College records. Her first free throw of the night gave her 116 made free throws on the season, setting the single-season record for free throws made. Additionally, the first make was the 341st of her career, putting her atop of the career free throws made list.
Starters Get it Done
The starting five of
Jessica Zoltowski '14,
Liz Forrest '14,
Alex Balara '15,
Maria Thannhauser '14, and
Meghan Loya '16 scored 68 of EC's 70 points against Penn Tech. The starters accounted for 97.1 percent of the team's total points, just slightly below the 98.5 percent mark the starting five set against Sage College earlier this season.
Another Double-Double for Zoltowski
In Wednesday's win over Penn Tech,
Jessica Zoltowski '14 scored 25 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. The double-double performance is also the eleventh of her career.
Over 80 Percent Again
The Soaring Eagles are a solid free throw shooting team, knocking down 72 percent of all attempts on the season, but their performance lately from the charity stripe has been stellar. EC has exceeded their season average in eight of their last nine games, culminating in a 17-of-19 effort (89.5 percent) on Wednesday against Penn Tech. The 89.5 percent success rate is the highest percentage this season and the highest an Elmira team has shot from the free throw line since February 15th of last season when the Purple and Gold shot 90.5 percent on 19-of-21 shooting.
If a Tree Falls in a Forrest…
Liz Forrest '14 had been in a slight scoring slump since the start of the New Year having only scored in double-figures twice prior to Wednesday's victory over Penn Tech. Forrest scored 13 points in a win over Nazareth on January 3rd and 17 points the following day in a victory over St. John Fisher College, but she had gone 13 straight games without eclipsing double-digits until Forrest scored 14 points against the Wildcats. She also added nine rebounds against Penn Tech, the fifth time she has grabbed as many this season.
