Pine Valley, NY -- The Elmira College men's tennis team suffered a 9-0 setback against NCAA Division II Roberts Wesleyan College in Elmira's spring season opener.
The Redhawks of Roberts Wesleyan jumped out to a 3-0 lead after sweeping the doubles matches. However, the Soaring Eagles put up a good fight in each match, with Elmira's first doubles tandem of
Sam Pine '14 and
Keith Bujak '15 putting forth a good effort as they fell 8-4.
Moving to singles, the Elmira men were unable to pick up a singles point but did show signs of good tennis in their spring opener. Bujak had a good first set at second singles, dropping the first by only a break. He would eventually fall 6-3, 6-1.
Turning the most heads this afternoon was second-year netter
Austin Mansell '16 who also had a strong showing. Mansell primarily played six singles last season, but today stepped up to play third singles, pushing his opponent to the brink in the first set. Mansell would drop his match at the third spot, 6-4, 6-1.
The Elmira men will look to bounce back next weekend when the Soaring Eagles host Penn State Behrend in a non-conference match on Saturday, February 22nd at 3:00 p.m. at the Murray Athletic Center in Pine Valley, NY.
