Elmira, NY -- The Elmira College men's ice hockey team will take on Hobart College tonight in a crucial ECAC West matchup. Tonight's game will play a large role as to who will receive the top seed in the end of the year ECAC West Tournament. The puck is set to drop at the Cooler, in Geneva, NY at 7:00 p.m.
Playoff Picture Still Blurry
Last weekend, both Elmira College and Utica College could have taken a commanding lead in the conference standings, but after splitting games, the number one seed in the conference tournament is still up for grabs. To make things even more complicated, Hobart College took a loss against Nazareth College, which if they had won, would have given them sole possession of first place in the ECAC West entering Saturday's game.
Season High
In last Saturday's game against Utica College, the Soaring Eagles accumualted 52 penalty minutes on 14 penalties. The 52 penalty minutes are the most Elmira has had in a single-game this season and the most since last year's meeting against Utica when EC totaled 54 penalty minutes on November 16, 2012.
Also a Season High
In the second period of Saturday's game against Utica College, the Pioneers peppered the EC net with 22 shots. The 22 shots on goal are the most Elmira has seen all season and the most they have given up since last year's final game against Manhattanville College when the Valiants launched 22 in the first and second periods of the game.
Hats-Off to Taulien
Rookie forward
Alexander Taulien '17 had his best game as a Soaring Eagle last Friday as he led Elmira to a 7-6 OT defeat of No. 12 Utica College. In the win, Taulien recorded his first career hat-trick and also assisted on another EC score. For his efforts, Taulien was named as the ECAC West Rookie of the Week.
Back-to-Back Hat Tricks
Elmira had back-to-back games in which a Soaring Eagle recorded three goals. Against Neumann University,
Josh Burnell '15 scored three times and against No. 12 Utica College,
Alexander Taulien '17 scored three goals. The last time Elmira had back-to-back games where someone scored three goals or more dates back to the 1999-00 season when Steve Kaye recorded a hat-trick against Manhattanville College on February 25th which was followed by a three goal effort by Adrian Saul the following night against Hobart College.
Power Play Unit, Still No. 1
The Soaring Eagles went 0-10 on power play opportunities last week against Utica, marking the first time this season EC has gone back-to-back games without scoring a power play goal. Despite going scoreless on man-up situations, Elmira still boasts the nation's top power play unit, scoring on 28.8% of their chances.
Following a Loss
Elmira has done well in games following a loss. The Soaring Eagles are 5-2 in those games, with their only two losses coming against former No. 5 Utica College and former No. 10 Oswego State.
Ninth in the Nation
Josh Burnell '15 has really come on since the calendar flipped to 2014 as the captain has averaged 1.78 points per game in the nine games since the New Year. On the season, Burnell is averaging 1.42 points per game, ranking him ninth in the country in that category.
