Elmira, NY -- Fresh off their second straight 9-0 sweep to open the 2014-15 season, the Elmira College women's tennis team looks to continue their best start to a season in over 15 years when they take on Ithaca College on Wednesday, September 10th at 4:00 p.m.
Three in a RowEC's 9-0 win over the Cardinals marked Elmira's third consecutive win over St. John Fisher. Prior to the Purple and Gold's 6-3 win in 2012, which sparked the winning streak, EC had lost the previous nine matchups to St. John Fisher.
Welcome to the ShowThe Soaring Eagles have three freshmen in their starting lineup and all three had impressive debuts against St. John Fisher, winning in both singles and doubles.
Kimberly Salkin '18 made easy work of the Cardinals, as she did not drop a single game on the afternoon, winning 8-0 at first doubles and 6-0, 6-0 at first singles.
Rebecca Zeuschner '18 had a tougher test in her season debut at second doubles and fifth singles, but prevailed with an 8-6 victory in doubles and a 6-4, 6-3 win in singles. Finally,
Megan Fitzgerald '18 secured an 8-0 victory at third doubles, then followed it up with a 6-1, 6-4 win at sixth singles.
Third Place All to HerselfKayla Fitzgerald '15 went a perfect 4-0 last week, playing both second and fourth singles as well as first and third doubles. Her four wins increased her career total to 42 wins, moving her into sole possession of third place for total wins on Elmira College's all-time list.
From 0-0 to 2-0 in One DayAugust 30th was a tennis-filled day for Ithaca as the Bombers took on both SUNY Cortland as well as Alfred University that day. Ithaca started things off at 9:30 at nearby Cortland, taking down the Red Dragons, 9-0. Then, at 2:00 p.m. later that day, the Bombers rolled through Alfred by an identical 9-0 score.
Returning TalentGone from Ithaca is last year's USTA-ITA Northeast Regional Runner-Up and number one singles player Christina Nunez, but returning for the Bombers are a number of accomplished players, including both the 2012 and 2013 Empire 8 Rookies of the Year, Alyssa Steinweis and Haley Kusak, respectively. Of Ithaca's returners, four earned All-Conference honors in 2013, three in singles and one in doubles.
Looking AheadThe Soaring Eagles head out on the road for a pair of Empire 8 matches over the next week. EC travels to Utica College on Saturday, September 13th for a 1:00 p.m. match and then heads out to Houghton College on Thursday, September 18th for a 4:00 p.m. match.
