Elmira, NY -- The Elmira College men's soccer team fought until the final horn sounded, but their efforts came up just short as the Soaring Eagles fell to visiting RIT, 1-0. Jordan Dougherty '16, in his second start of the season, made eight saves for the Purple and Gold.
 
EC, coming off its three-goal performance against Hilbert College on Saturday, began the contest with plenty of intensity on both ends of the field. Elmira's Donte Donegal'18, who scored all three goals against the Hawks, had two quality runs towards the Tigers' net early in the first half, but was unable to capitalize on either one as the game remained scoreless. Austin Mansell'16 also had a great opportunity to net the game's first goal, but his header missed wide right.
 
RIT began to turn up the offensive pressure, outshooting EC 8-3 in the first half. The Tigers got on the board in the 39th minute with a goal from Dan Tomaszewski. An Elmira defender made a quality one-on-one play to dispossess the RIT player coming down the wing, but unfortunately for EC, the ball rolled towards the middle of the 18-yard box. Tomaszewski came crashing into the box and fired a shot into the lower left corner of the net, putting RIT up 1-0.
 
The Soaring Eagles did everything they could to score the equalizer in the second half, but the chances they had did not find the back of the net. Newcomer Jake Foti '18 had a good look at the goal from just outside the 18-yard box, but his left-footed shot was saved by a diving Mark Reeves. The final seconds ticked off the clock, sealing EC's 1-0 defeat.
 
The Purple and Gold will be back in action on Saturday, September 20th when EC travels to St. John Fisher College for Elmira's Empire 8 Conference opener. The game is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m.
