Women's Tennis Looking to Keep it Going Against St. John Fisher

Elmira College at St. John Fisher College
Game DetailsSunday, Sep. 7 - Pittsford, NY - 1:00 p.m.
Elmira, NY -- The Elmira College women's tennis team opens up Empire 8 play against St. John Fisher College on Sunday, September 7th. The match will be played in Pittsford, NY at the Mendon Raquet Club, beginning at 1:00 p.m.

Fresh Off a Sweep
Elmira is coming off a convincing 9-0 victory over Wells College Wednesday, moving to 1-0 in 2014-15 in the process. The Soaring Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead after a strong showing in doubles and carried that success into singles play as EC completed the 9-0 win by winning each singles match in straight sets. Wednesday's win was the fifth straight victory over Wells and their third 9-0 result in that span.

Making Their Debuts
EC boasts a talented three-woman freshman class who will all be making their official collegiate debuts Sunday against St. John Fisher College. All three players, Kimberly Salkin '18, Rebecca Zeuschner '18, and Megan Fitzgerald '18, earned starting spots in the lineup through their play this preseason and had a strong showing in Elmira's exhibition match against Oneonta State.

Going for Three in a Row
St. John Fisher dominated the series history for much of the first decade of the 21st century, but EC has been the ones coming out on top in recent years as Elmira is going for their third consecutive victory over the Cardinals. The Soaring Eagles defeated St. John Fisher by a 6-3 score in both 2012 and 2013, which ended a nine-match losing to the Cardinals.

A Look at Fisher
St. John Fisher is 0-1 on the season after suffering a difficult 9-0 loss to The College at Brockport in their season opener on August 29th. The Cardinals have plenty of new faces on the court this year as their starting lineup features just two holdovers from the starting lineup from the 2013-14 season, Sania Zaki and Catie Nonenmacher. Zaki played first singles and first doubles against The College at Brockport while Nonenmacher just played doubles with Zaki.

A Local Legend
Prior to the start of the 2014-15 season, long-time St. John Fisher head coach Linda Gohagan was honored as one of 15 people in the inaugural Class of 2014 to be inducted into The Rochester Tennis Hall of Fame. Gohagan has been at St. John Fisher since 1996 and was named the United States Tennis Association Easter Division's College Coach of the Year in 2007.

Looking Ahead
EC continues with Empire 8 play following their St. John Fisher match as the Soaring Eagles host nine-time defending Empire 8 Champion Ithaca College on Wednesday, September 10th. That match is scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m. at the Murray Athletic Center.
