Ithaca, NY -- The Elmira College men's tennis team concluded a weekend full of tennis today, completing play at the Ithaca Invitational. The individual tournament allowed each of EC's seven players to play a total of three singles matches and three doubles matches throughout the course of the two-day event which included players from Ithaca College and St. Lawrence University.
Elmira went winless on the weekend but several players had impressive showings despite limited practice leading up to the tournament.
Keith Bujak '15 more than held his own against the fellow number one singles players at the invitational, falling to Ithaca's Wes Davis and St. Lawrence's Rhonny Rosario 6-4, 6-2 and 7-6(2), 6-1, respectively. Bujak also teamed up with
Satchal Waters '16 in the first doubles flight, battling to a pair of 8-5 defeats.
In their first collegiate tennis competition, both
Steve Farnholz '18 and
Patrick Tracey '18 did not disappoint. Farnholtz threatened in each of his final two matchups, losing a pair of closely-contested matches against Ithaca and St. Lawrence. Tracey was not as fortunate in singles, however, he and Farnholz paired up in doubles, dropping an 8-3 decision to St. Lawrence's number one doubles team earlier Sunday afternoon. Also appearing in the Purple and Gold for the first time was
Chris Konow '18, who played sixth singles and third doubles with
Scott Ferron '16.
EC's closest match of the weekend came from the number seven spot where
Neal Statts '17 was playing. Statts and Ithaca's Charlie Vaca were the final singles match of the tournament and neither player held anything back. Statts jumped out to an early lead in the first set, eventually taking it in a tiebreaker. Unfortunately for Statts and Elmira, he would lose the second set 6-2 and then fall in the 10-point super tiebreaker, 10-7.
The Soaring Eagles will be back in action next weekend for another individual tournament. EC travels to King's College in Wilkes-Barre, PA to compete in the King's Invitational, which begins on Saturday, September 13th.
