Rochester, NY -- In one of the most anticipated Empire 8 Conference matches of the 2015 season, the Elmira College women's tennis team would come up just short on the road to Nazareth College, 6-3.
For a fifth time this season, the Elmira women won 2-of-3 doubles matches, as the Soaring Eagles picked up wins at first and second doubles.
Ayaka Yoshino '16 and
Ellen Plowman '16 tallied an 8-4 win at the first spot while second doubles tandem
Stephanie Tock '16 and
Megan Fitzgerald '18 earned an 8-1 victory.
Heading into singles play with a 2-1 lead, Elmira just needed three singles victories to clinch their fifth win of the year. Yoshino put the Soaring Eagles two wins away from a team-win, as she rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at first singles.
Unfortunately, the Purple and Gold were unable to tally another singles win, as the Golden Flyers prevailed on their home courts by a 6-3 score line.
Turning PointIn all four of Elmira's wins this season, the Soaring Eagles have received wins at first, second, third and fourth singles. Today, needing just three singles victories, Elmira only saw one of their top four singles players register a win, which ultimately led to a 6-3 defeat.
