Slow Start Plagues Baseball in Road Tilt against Ithaca

Ithaca, NY -- The Elmira College baseball team surrendered seven runs in the first three innings of today's game against the Bombers of Ithaca College, all but sealing a 9-4 loss for the Soaring Eagles.  Six of Ithaca's first seven runs were unearned as a passed ball and a fielding error played a major role in Elmira's early seven-run deficit.

Three of Ithaca's first seven runs came in the second inning, all of which were setup by a one-out passed ball.  The other four occurred in the third as a two-out fielding error extended the inning long enough for the Bombers to take a commanding 7-0 lead which would eventually turn into a 9-0 lead in the sixth inning.

Elmira put one on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh inning on a Nate Hanner '18 RBI single that scored Conor Bawiec '18, who began the inning with a leadoff double.

Two innings later, in the top of the ninth, Elmira pieced together a mini rally as the Soaring Eagles saw their first seven batters reach safely on four hits, two walks, and one fielder's choice.  Matt van Muelken '18, Will Jenkins '18, and Dennis Rudolph '18 each registered an RBI in the inning.

However, Elmira's mini rally would come up short as the Soaring Eagles suffered a 9-4 road loss to Ithaca.

Alexander Taulien '17 got the start for the Soaring Eagles this afternoon.  He pitched 5.2 innings and allowed three earned runs.  Nick Sampogna '18 and Mike Ladka '16 pitched the remaining 2.1 innings and each struck out one batter in the process.

The Soaring Eagles will be back in action this Thursday, April 23rd when Elmira welcomes Keuka College to Dunn Field for a non-conference doubleheader.  Thursday's doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
