Late Rally Falls Short for Baseball

Ithaca, NY -- A ninth-inning rally came up short for the Elmira College baseball team as they fell at Ithaca College, 8-4. Mike Burghardt '18 started the rally with a pinch-hit, two-run double in the top of the ninth inning, one of EC's six hits on the day.

The Bombers struck first, scoring three runs in the bottom of the second inning. EC looked to cut into the deficit, but Ithaca's starter, Ryan Contegni, did not allow a Soaring Eagle hit until the top of the fourth inning. Ithaca added one in the fourth inning and two in both the sixth and seventh innings to take an 8-0 lead.

After not being able to push across a run after getting two runners on in the top of the eighth inning, the Soaring Eagles started their rally in the top of the ninth, plating four runs. Brandon Davis'18 led off with a walk and Jordan Marquez'18 followed with another walk to put runners on first and second. Both Davis and Marquez advanced a base on a fielder's choice and then scored on Burghardt's double. Bryce Plante'18 had an RBI groundout, bringing home Dylan Bellinger'17 and then Burghardt scored on a throwing error by Ithaca's shortstop. Unfortunately, EC's rally would end there as Hayden Rothenberg'17 grounded out to end the game.

EC returns to action tomorrow, April 28th when they travel to Oneonta State for a non-conference game. The first pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
