Men’s Tennis Stumbles in Fall Opener to Oswego State

Score: Oswego State 7 – Elmira College 2
Record: Oswego State (2-0); Elmira (0-1)
Location: Romney Outdoor Tennis Courts – Oswego, NY

Oswego, NY -- Playing in their first match of the fall season, the Elmira College men's tennis dropped a 7-2 decision on the road to Oswego State. The win for the Lakers snaps an Elmira nine-match win streak, dating back to the 2008 season, when Oswego also won a 7-2 match against the Soaring Eagles.

Elmira began today's match in an early 2-0 hole, as the Soaring Eagles traveled with just five players.  EC forfeited matches at third doubles and six singles.  To make matters even worse, Elmira's number one singles and doubles player, Satchal Waters '16, suffered an injury early in doubles which would ultimately force him to retire in his singles match.

Although EC suffered an early season setback, there were positives today.  Classmates Chris Konow '18 and Patrick Tracey '18 were both winners in singles, winning at the third and fourth spots, respectively.  Both wins by Konow and Tracey came in straight sets.

Turning Point
Today's turning point took place in doubles action, when Waters suffered an injury.  Waters entered today's match on an eight-match win streak against the Lakers but his injury proved to get the better of him, as he suffered his first losses to the Lakers.  If Waters would have been able to pull out his matches, healthy, it would have surely affected the complexion of today's match.

Match Recap
  • Elmira forfeited matches at third doubles, sixth singles, and had a retirement at first singles.
  • Konow and Tracey nearly earned a win at second doubles but lost 9-7, as Elmira dropped all three doubles matches.
  • Konow was a 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) winner at third singles.
  • Tracey earned a convincing 6-1, 6-1 win at the fourth spot.
  • Newcomers Yu Ikeda and Jordan Curtis all suffered straight set losses.
  • Curtis had a tough battle at fifth singles, dropping a 6-4, 6-3 decision.

News and Notes
  • Oswego's win is their first victory against EC since 2008.
  • Konow played at third singles for just the second time in his EC career and today earned his first win at that position.
  • Similar to his classmate, Tracey was playing in just his third match at fourth singles. Today was his first win at the fourth spot.
