EC opens the weekend with a Saturday, February 13th, matchup with Salem International University, before taking on Roberts Wesleyan University on Sunday, February 14th. Both matches are scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
Last Time OutElmira dropped its spring-opener on the road against NCAA Division II opponent Daemen College. Despite a valiant effort on the courts by the EC netters, the Purple and Gold were unable to capture a point, as the Wildcats claimed a 9-0 victory. With the loss, Elmira falls to 0-2 on the season.
Waters Record WatchFourth-year standout
Satchal Waters '16 has been phenomenal for the Soaring Eagles since his debut in 2012. Entering the final stage of his collegiate career, Waters sits on 49 total career victories, which ranks second in program history. The Elmira, NY, native needs just nine wins to move into a two-way tie for first place in the record books with former EC great Gabe Cortes '11.
Mansell Closing In Along with Waters, classmate
Austin Mansell '16 is also closing in on the top spot for total career wins. Through his first three years with the Soaring Eagles, Mansell has accumulated 44 victories, just five wins shy of Waters' total and 14 from the top spot.
Scouting the TigersSalem International University is in its first year of existence as a collegiate tennis program. The Tigers opened their inaugural season with a 9-0 loss to West Virginia Wesleyan University, before suffering another defeat in its most recent outing against UVa-Wise, 8-1. Alex Werries was Salem International's lone winner, as the Jacksonville, IL, native edged his opponent at the fifth singles position by a pair of breaks, 7-5, 7-5.
Scouting the RedhawksRoberts Wesleyan College opens its spring this weekend, although the Redhawks have already played in six matches in 2015-16. The Redhawks opened its fall schedule with three consecutive wins, including a pair of 9-0 sweeps. However, Roberts' success tapered at the tail-end, as the team dropped three straight to a pair of Division II teams, as well as Division III power University of Rochester. Regardless of the team's record, the Redhawks are match-tested. Charles Farres holds down the top singles spot for Roberts, and has been perfect in that role. Farres is unbeaten in singles action this season, which includes a 6-0 record in dual matches with just one set dropped during that time.
Looking AheadElmira returns to action next Friday, February 19th, when the Soaring Eagles open play at the EC Spring Kickoff Invitational. The Purple and Gold open the invite with a 1:00 p.m. showdown with Farmingdale State College. EC continues play the following Saturday and Sunday with matches against Purchase College and Alfred University, respectively.
