ONEONTA, N.Y. -- It was another challenging afternoon for the Elmira College women's tennis team, as the Soaring Eagles hit the road to face SUNY Oneonta in a non-league match. Elmira salvaged one point in what would turn out to be an 8-1 victory for the Red Dragons in Oneonta, New York.
 
The Red Dragons flexed their muscle early on in the doubles portion of today's match. Houghton won all three matches, dropping just three games in the process, to take a 3-0 lead heading into singles action. Oneonta quickly picked up singles wins at positions third through sixth, surrendering just two games in those four matches, to clinch the match.
 
Matches at first and second singles were much closer, as both contests were pushed to a third set.
 
Megan Fitzgerald '18 came up short in her match at the second singles position, but showed a good fighting spirit throughout. The Thomaston, Connecticut, native won the opening frame thanks to a pair of breaks, 6-2. However, her counterpart from Oneonta responded by taking the second set by a late break, 7-5, before pulling out a close 10-7 super tiebreaker for the win.
 
Fitzgerald's doubles partner, Tilila El Yazidi '20, also saw her match go the distance, as she played in the first three-set match of her collegiate career. Similar to Fitzgerald, El Yazidi won the opening frame, 6-4, but would drop the second at 3-6. However, the rookie showed the poise of a seasoned veteran in the breaker and held on for a 10-6 victory.
