ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College women's tennis team opens Empire 8 Conference play in just its second match of the year, as the Soaring Eagles travel to face Houghton College on Wednesday, September 7th, at 4:00 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT: Elmira picked up a routine 9-0 win over visiting Pennsylvania College of Technology in EC's season opener last Saturday. The Soaring Eagles dominated the match from start to finish, winning 96-of-113 total games played. Freshman
Tilila El Yazidi '20 earned the match-deciding point at first singles with a 6-1, 6-0 win.
THE STREAK CONTINUES: EC's season-opening win over the Wildcats of Penn College increased the team's home unbeaten streak to eight matches. The streak includes Elmira's perfect 6-0 home record from a season ago, as well as a 9-0 victory over Lycoming College in EC's 2014-15 home finale.
HONORS FOR FITZGERALD: After posting a pair of wins over Penn College, third-year talent
Megan Fitzgerald '18 was named the EC Athlete of the Week. Fitzgerald was an 8-2 winner at first doubles and was victorious at second singles thanks to a 6-0, 6-0 win.
SCOUTING HOUGHTON: The Highlanders enter Wednesday's conference bout with a 0-1 record, after falling in their season- and conference-opener to St. John Fisher College, 6-3. Jacquelyn Lewis was a double-winner for Houghton, earning a 6-0, 6-1 win at fourth singles and a hard-fought 9-8 victory at second doubles. Houghton's other point came from its top singles player, Caroline Phillips, who claimed a 6-2, 6-3 win.
ALL-TIME SERIES: Wednesday's match will be the fourth all-time meeting between the two programs, as Elmira and Houghton have met each year since the 2013 season. Elmira enters the match having won the previous three matchups, including a 9-0 victory on Houghton's home courts back in 2013.
LOOKING AHEAD: The Soaring Eagles return to action this Friday, September 9th, for another conference match, as Elmira travels to face Utica College. The opening serve is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
