HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- The Elmira College women's tennis team opened Empire 8 Conference play this afternoon on the road against Houghton College on the Highlanders' home courts. Unfortunately, Elmira was unable to secure its first E8 win of the year, as the Soaring Eagles dropped the conference opener by a 6-3 final.
 
After conceding matches at second and third doubles, Elmira's top tandem of Megan Fitzgerald '18 and Tilila El Yazidi '20 gave the Purple and Gold their first point of the match with an 8-5 victory. The win for the newly formed duo is their second straight of the year.
 
El Yazidi and Fitzgerald were also Elmira's lone winners in the singles portion of today's match, as the two Soaring Eagles picked up wins at first and second singles, respectively. El Yazidi was a 6-3, 6-2 winner, while Fitzgerald pulled out a tightly contested three-setter, 6-1, 4-6, 10-3.
 
Fitzgerald's two wins this afternoon vaulted the junior netter several spots in the EC record books. Her 38 career wins moved her into a two-way tie for ninth place in program history, while her 19 singles and 19 doubles victories place her in a tie for seventh and eighth place, respectively.
