Women's Basketball Challenges Non-League Opponent Wells College

Complete Game Notes

ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College women's basketball team welcomes non-conference opponent Wells College to Speidel Gymnasium on Tuesday, January 26th. The game between the Express and the Soaring Eagles is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.

EIGHT AND COUNTING FOR VESPUCCI
  • In Tuesday's meeting with Nazareth College, Rachel Vespucci '19 posted her eighth double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 boards.
  • This is a rare feat for a Soaring Eagle to accomplish, as she became the first since former Empire 8 Conference Player of the Year, Jennifer Parker '06, recorded 10 double-doubles in the 2003-04 season.
  • This number also ranks well in the country, as the Macedon, New York, product sits 42nd in this category.
  • Vespucci's rebound per game average also reflects well in the national rankings, as her conference-leading 10.9 boards per game sits 41st in all of Division III.
  • She is also still performing well on the offensive boards, as her conference-leading 4.9 offensive rebounds per game are 20th-best in the country.
  • The 5-foot-9-inch forward has also seen in increase in her offensive production, as she has raised her scoring average by 7.6 points per game from last season.

FRANKLIN EARNS MULTIPLE AWARDS
  • The outstanding play of freshman guard Lauren Franklin '20 has not gone unnoticed by the basketball community, as she has won three separate awards in the past week.
  • On Monday, she was awarded both EC Athlete of the Week and Empire 8 Conference Rookie of the Week for her play during the week of January 15th-21st.
  • On Wednesday, Franklin was named Corvias ECAC North Rookie of the Week.
  • In that stretch, the Soaring Eagles went 2-1, with victories over Alfred University and Houghton College.
  • In those three games, she averaged a double-double with 11.7 points and 10.3 rebounds, to go along with 2.7 steals and 1.7 assists per game.

WELLS AT A GLANCE
  • The Express enter today's contest riding a three-game losing streak, which puts their overall record at 4-8.
  • All three losses came against fellow North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) programs and were all by seven points or less.
  • The Express have gone 1-2 against E8 teams this season, as they possess double-digit losses to Ithaca College and Nazareth and own a 67-53 victory over Alfred University.
  • The Express enter today's meeting with a very young roster, as 10 of their 12 players are either freshman or sophomores.
  • Despite this young squad, Wells has still gotten exceptional play out of its small number of upperclassmen, as its lone senior, guard Ashida Cooper, owns a conference-leading 23.9 scoring average, which also ranks fourth in the country.
  • Cooper has also played well on the defensive end of the court, as her 3.6 steals per game rank second in the conference and 22nd in the nation.
  • Junior forward Kamarie Maturine has been a terror on the boards all season, as she averages a team-leading 9.9 rebounds per game and leads the team in blocks with 14.
