ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Elmira College field hockey's season-long four-game homestand comes to a close today with a matchup against Bryn Mawr College. The non-conference bout is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m. at the Murray Athletic Center.
LAST TIME OUT
The Soaring Eagles finished with a 1-1 record in their two games last week. EC began the series of home contests at the Murray Athletic Center with an impressive 6-3 non-conference victory over Wells College.
Alison Mariano '18 and
Katie Carroll '18 led the offense with five and four points, respectively. Mariano tallied Elmira's two first-half goals in addition to an assist, while Carroll produced two goals in the second half, the latter of which capped off a 4-0 run. However, EC was unable to reproduce its offensive showing on Saturday against E8 foe, Utica College. The Soaring Eagles were limited to 10 shots, including nine shots on goal, in a 4-0 loss to the Pioneers. Goalie
Tina O'Donnell '20 made a combined 15 saves while playing 134:36 minutes and she earned her first career victory in the midweek bout against Wells.
FOUR-YEAR STARTERS
Seven different Soaring Eagles have been in the starting lineup for all 13 games thus far into the 2017 campaign. This isn't anything new for seniors Carroll and
Atu Machika '18, as they are the only two members of the Class of 2018 who have started every game since the beginning of their freshman seasons in 2014. Carroll, a Somerville, Maine, native, and Machika, who hails from Machinga, Malawi, have been in the starting line for 63 consecutive contests. Mariano is not far behind, as Saturday's game marked the 61st start of her collegiate career, while she joins Carroll and Machika as one of just three seniors to appear in all 63 games since 2014.
SCOUTING BRYN MAWR
The Owls, members of the Centennial Conference, are amidst one of their finest seasons in recent memory. After winning just one game over the past two seasons, including a winless 2015 campaign, Bryn Mawr enters today's tilt with a 5-8 overall record. The Owls opened the season with four wins in their first five contests, all of which came in shutout fashion, with the only blemish in that span coming in a one-goal loss to Immaculata University. The most impressive of those victories was a 7-0 rout of Bryn Athyn on September 13. Since then, however, Bryn Mawr has gone just 1-7, with all seven losses coming within conference play. The young parliament of Owls, which boasts just four juniors and no seniors, is led offensively by Mary Cugini. The sophomore has scored a team-leading six goals, including the game-winner in the team's most recent win, a 2-1 overtime defeat of Moravian on September 26. Junior Angela Meng has started all 13 games and has accumulated 868:35 minutes between the posts. Her five wins, four shutouts and 2.01 goals-against average are all career-bests for the third-year keeper.
SERIES HISTORY
Today's contest marks just the second all-time meeting between the Soaring Eagles and the Owls. The first matchup took place last season and saw Bryn Mawr come out victorious by a 3-2 final score in overtime. Machika and Mariano both found the back of the cage in the bout.
NON-CONFERENCE OPPOSITION
Today's game marks the Soaring Eagles' second-to-last non-conference bout of the season. Over the past few years, Elmira has done well against non-league opposition, as eight of its nine wins since 2015 have come against teams outside of the E8. In 2017, EC has recorded both of its wins and has tallied nearly 74-percent of its goals in non-conference matchups. The Purple and Gold's most recent non-league bout was their 6-3 win over Wells, which stands as the team's highest-scoring game since the 2013 campaign.
O'DONNELL RULES
Second-year goalie O'Donnell secured her first-ever collegiate victory last week, as the Soaring Eagles dispatched the Express, 6-3. It was a milestone moment for the Kutztown, Pennsylvania, native, who has made tremendous strides in her sophomore campaign. O'Donnell, who ranks third in the Empire 8 in saves per game (7.90), opened the 2017 season with a career-high 22 saves against Scranton and has come up with double-digit stops on three occasions. She also ranks among the conference leaders in save percentage (.760), a drastic improvement from the .560 save percentage she recorded in limited action as a freshman.
LOOKING AHEAD
The EC women will return to action on Saturday, October 21, when they will square off against conference foe Houghton College. The road bout is scheduled to take place at 12:00 p.m. at the Highlanders' Burke Field.
