ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College field hockey team is set for an Empire 8 Conference matchup against Houghton College on Saturday, October 21. The bout will take place at the Highlanders' Burke Field in Houghton, New York. at 2:00 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
The Purple and Gold suffered a 1-0 setback to Bryn Mawr College on Monday afternoon at the Murray Athletic Center. The two opponents finished the contest tied in shots (6) and saves (2). The Owls' 10-to-3 advantage in penalty corners helped swing the tilt in their favor, as the lone goal of the day was a result of a penalty corner in the 15th minute. Bryn Mawr's Lydia Fisher inserted the ball to Sara Rilatt, who rifled a shot past EC's starting goalkeeper,
Julie Hockenberger '18, for the eventual game-winning goal. Hockenberger made two saves in the complete-game effort. With a team-high three shots, freshman
Janie Kempf '21 led the way for the Soaring Eagles' offense.
HITTING THE ROAD
Saturday's bout will serve as EC's first road contest in the past two weeks. Elmira's offense had been clicking in their away games, as it has scored a goal in all but one of its seven tilts away from the MAC. In total, the Soaring Eagles have recorded 13 of their 19 goals this season on the road. Kempf, in particular, seems to shine brightest in away matchups. The rookie from New Woodstock, New York, has tallied all of her team-leading six goals in road bouts. Scoreless in her last four contests, this change in venue might help restart the scoring tear that Kempf was on to begin the season. Â
SCOUTING THE HIGHLANDERS
Houghton enters Saturday's meeting in the fifth spot in the E8 standings with its 3-3 conference record. Overall, the Highlanders are 7-7 and are 2-2 in the month of October. Houghton's most recent result was a 4-0 win over Nazareth College on Friday, October 13, in Rochester, New York. The Highlanders have been at their best this season when they play strong defense. On the year, Houghton ranks fourth in the E8 in opponent goals per game (1.86). Leading the Highlanders' defense has been senior goalkeeper Elizabeth Piszker, who ranks fourth in the conference in goals-against average (1.87) and sixth in save percentage (0.732). Offensively, freshman Caitlin Jennings paces the team in points (22) and goals (10). In the E8, Jennings ranks fourth in goals per game (.714). Fellow rookie Hannah Daniels has also played fantastic, as the Schnecksville, Pennsylvania, native leads the Highlanders with five assists on the year. Â Â
SERIES HISTORY
Saturday's bout marks the 13th all-time meeting between these two Empire 8 foes. Houghton owns a 9-3 advantage over EC in the previous matchups after winning two straight. The Soaring Eagles last beat the Highlanders in 2014, when Elmira scored a goal in the first minute of overtime to seal a 3-2 victory at the Murray Athletic Center.
LOOKING AHEAD
Following Saturday's tilt, the EC women will take a short break from league play to face off against the Wolves of Keuka College on Tuesday, October 24. The weekday game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex in Keuka Park, New York.Â
