HOBOKEN, N.J. -- The Elmira College women's tennis team came up short on the road in Empire 8 Conference action to the Ducks of Stevens Institute of Technology by a 9-0 final score. Elmira concludes the fall portion of its 2017-18 schedule next Monday, October 9, when the Soaring Eagles travel to Rochester, New York, to take on the Golden Flyers of Nazareth College.
Stevens jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the match by winning all three doubles contests. The Ducks surrendered just six games total in the trio of matches, with the closest match taking place at No. 2 doubles, where
Emily Green '18 and
Sarah Hill '19 fell by an 8-3 score line.
Singles action proved to be much of the same for the Soaring Eagles, as they fell short in all six matches, five of which were decided in straight sets. The most competitive match of the six took place at the No. 1 spot, where
Megan Fitzgerald '18 battled Stevens' Julia Earl in a three-set thriller.
After winning the opening set, 6-3, Fitzgerald dropped the second frame by a 6-1 score. With the overall match already decided, a super tiebreaker was played in place of a full third set. In the first to 10 tiebreaker, Fitzgerald fought valiantly but eventually came out on the wrong end of a 10-5 decision.
